This reflection began not in an academic setting, but in a long and often weary conversation with a friend—an intelligent, liberal man whose education and moral seriousness I respect. I was struck by how easily moral passion turns into moral blindness, and how quickly our public speech has shifted from reasoning to denunciation. Every civilization eventually learns that unity cannot mean uniformity.
