Building a 1000 MWe fusion reactor that operates reliably is one of the most complex engineering endeavors imaginable. The challenges span physics—controlling the plasma, sustaining the burn—engineering, materials science, and fuel logistics. Each of these by itself is a major project; together, they make the first fusion power plants costly experiments. It’s not that fusion can’t work—we know it can produce energy—it’s whether it can be made to work in a controlled, economic, and safe manner on the scale of a commercial power station. The superposition of these challenges is what leads many to be skeptical.
