Cold exposure kills not because energy is absent, but because the human body often fails to convert available energy into retained body heat quickly enough under real environmental conditions. People have died of cold while carrying food, fully conscious, and only hours from rescue. This paper presents a practical, quantitative heat-balance framework for a common and realistic scenario: ambient temperature near freezing (32°F), moderate wind, appropriate clothing, yet a gradual net loss of body heat.
