Birth and Death of Representative Democracy
From Representative Democracy to Direct Representation Democracy
From the essay
We tend to experience our political system as permanent. If daily life is predictable and institutions still work, the structure of governance feels like the “default state of civilization.” Yet history repeatedly shows that this feeling is an illusion of proximity. Stability is real, but permanence is not. Representative Democracy has a lifecycle: birth conditions, maturity, stress accumulation, and failure modes. Direct Representation Democracy is not a simple reform; it is a structural redesign of governance. Implemented carelessly, it could be more dangerous than the system it replaces. It is best understood not as an immediate prescription but as a possible evolutionary stage.
