Dignity and Respect
From the essay
The “Right to Dignity” is a legal and philosophical concept that refers to the inherent worth of every individual and the protection of that worth through laws, policies, and societal norms. The distinction between dignity and respect helps to resolve the tension in debates about human rights and moral obligations. Dignity is a universal baseline for humane treatment that applies to everyone, while respect is conditional and personal. Recognizing this allows societies to uphold justice and fairness while accommodating individual judgments about others’ actions or character.
