Whole-Body Hemodynamic and Lymphatic Responses to Intense Upper-Body Exercise
A Quantitative Physiological Model
From the essay
Upper-body exercise—particularly intense, continuous resistance activity involving the arms and shoulders—activates physiological mechanisms that extend far beyond the local musculature. Although the muscle mass engaged is relatively small, the combination of rapid metabolic activation, heat production, autonomic arousal, and rhythmic mechanical contractions initiate systemic cardiovascular and lymphatic responses.
