Overview
In physical systems, resonance occurs when an object or structure is driven at its natural frequency, allowing small periodic forces to build into large oscillations. This can lead to highly amplified motion— or catastrophic failure if uncontrolled. A common example is a child being pushed on a swing: if each push comes in sync with the swing's natural rhythm, the motion grows with minimal effort. More critically, engineers worry about resonance in buildings, bridges, turbines, or aircraft components—any system where sustained oscillations can cause material fatigue or collapse.
